Bridging the Gap in Infectious Disease Information
The COVID-19 pandemic starkly demonstrated the devastating impact of infectious diseases and the critical need for reliable, science-backed information. Misinformation and “infodemics” can be as dangerous as the diseases themselves. Germsights was founded to address this challenge. We explore the complex dynamics of infectious diseases, viewed through the vital One Health lens, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Our mission is to provide clear, accurate, and accessible information on zoonotic diseases, emerging infectious threats, and the importance of One Health, empowering individuals and communities to make informed decisions and protect their health.
A One Health Approach to Protecting Wildlife and Human Health
Germsights Publishing Co. is led by Dr. Nurul Islam, a disease ecologist and veterinarian specializing in the intersection of wildlife health and emerging infectious diseases, with a strong focus on the One Health approach. Currently a Graduate Research Assistant at the Turner Lab (Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, University of Wisconsin-Madison), Dr. Islam’s investigating the behaviors of white-tailed deer relevant to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) transmission, utilizing video data analysis from camera traps and GPS collars. Prior to this, Dr. Islam served as a Technical Advisor at GHD|EMPHNET, leveraging expertise in outbreak investigation and One Health surveillance design to address emerging and neglected zoonotic diseases. With over 10 years of experience in the field, including research on Nipah Encephalitis, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, and bat conservation (as a proud IUCN Bat Specialist Group member), Dr. Islam brings a unique blend of ecological understanding and practical experience to Germsights. His DVM from Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, a Master’s in Veterinary Medicine (Biosecurity & Wildlife Health) from Massey University, New Zealand, and experience as a Veterinary Consultant (One Health) for the Global Health Security Agenda at IEDCR further solidify his commitment to advancing One Health solutions for global health security.
